Choose the output based on the image and its purpose. JPEG is common for photographs; PNG preserves sharp graphics and transparency without lossy compression; WebP offers lossy and lossless options. A format conversion is not automatically smaller or visually identical.

Resize to the actual display need, allowing for high-density screens and any future crop. Keep the original file so you can recover detail or metadata later. Export a candidate, compare it at the size people will view, and inspect edges, text, gradients, color, transparency, and metadata. Try a few settings and measure file size rather than promising a fixed percentage reduction. If the image is an archival source or must retain exact pixels, choose lossless processing.

Export for the actual display density: an image shown at 600 CSS pixels may need a 1200-pixel source on a 2× screen, but a 4000-pixel file still wastes bandwidth. Compare candidates at their final dimensions and inspect text, faces, gradients and saturated edges; chroma subsampling can damage colored text before general blur becomes obvious. Keep one untouched master, resize once, and encode each derivative directly from it. Repeated JPEG conversions accumulate artifacts even when every individual quality setting looks moderate.
