Regular expressions become easier when you connect each symbol to an observed match. Start with literal text, then add a character class, an anchor, or a quantifier and inspect the result. For example, \d+ matches one or more digits in many regex engines, while ^ and $ depend on multiline settings.

Build tests with examples that should match and examples that must not. Pay attention to the target language: flags, Unicode handling, and escaping can differ across engines. Use a regex tester to explore, then run the final pattern in the application. For nested HTML or other structured input, use a parser instead of stretching a regex beyond its role.

Record the regex engine and flags with the pattern because escaping, Unicode classes, lookbehind and anchor behavior differ across languages. Build a test table containing expected matches, expected non-matches, captures, empty input, newlines and long near-misses. A pattern can be functionally correct yet unsafe if nested or ambiguous repetition creates catastrophic backtracking; put length limits and execution timeouts around untrusted input. Use regex to recognize a bounded lexical shape, then apply normal code for deeper structural validation.
