Sliding Puzzle
Slide numbered tiles into the correct order. A classic brain teaser!
About Sliding Puzzle
The Sliding Puzzle, also known as the 15-puzzle, is a classic combination puzzle invented in 1874. It consists of numbered square tiles in a frame, with one tile missing. The goal is to arrange the tiles in numerical order by sliding them into the empty space. It's one of the most well-known and studied puzzles in mathematics.
How to Play
Click on any tile adjacent to the empty space to slide it into the gap. You can also use the arrow keys to move tiles. The goal is to arrange all tiles in order from 1 to 15 (or 1 to 8 for the 3×3 version). Tiles in the correct position will be highlighted. Try to solve the puzzle in as few moves as possible!
Tips & Strategies
- •Start by solving the top row first, then work your way down row by row.
- •Learn the technique for placing the last two tiles in a row — it requires a specific rotation pattern.
- •Keep already-solved rows intact while working on the next row.
- •For the last two rows, solve them column by column from left to right.
- •Practice with the 3×3 puzzle first to learn the basic techniques before tackling the 4×4.
