HTTP 503 means the server handling the request is not ready to serve it at that moment. Maintenance or overload are common causes, but the code alone does not reveal the root cause or guarantee when service will return. A proxy can also issue the response when an upstream service is unavailable.

Check for a Retry-After header or an official status update. If retrying is safe, wait and try again with backoff; do not repeatedly submit a payment or other non-idempotent action without checking whether it completed. If you operate the service, inspect logs and upstream health rather than assuming the user’s browser caused it. MDN documents 503 as a temporary server-side condition, but real incidents still need diagnosis.

Check for a Retry-After header and respect it. A person should wait rather than hammer refresh; an API client should use capped exponential backoff with jitter. Automatically retry only operations that are safe to repeat, unless the request uses a reliable idempotency key. A 503 can come from a gateway, maintenance layer or unavailable dependency and may persist longer than expected. For login, payment or submission flows, verify whether the original action succeeded before sending it again.
