Spacebar is more than a chat web page; self-hosting includes the server and its supporting services. If your goal is control over a Discord-like community, test the architecture and maintenance burden before inviting users.

Follow the Spacebar server guide for a staging installation. Create roles, channels, an attachment, and a bot integration only if you will use it. Back up all persistent data, restore to another host, and verify message history and access rules. Test updates with a staging copy and note client-compatibility limits from the official FAQ.

Document who handles moderation, abusive uploads, credential resets, TLS, and service outages. Compare alternatives using the same member count and features. An instance you own offers flexibility, but the server's safety and continuity become your team's responsibility.
