For a small site, begin with the canonical URLs of public pages you want search engines to discover: homepage, key category pages, and useful articles or products. Leave out login pages, private areas, broken URLs, and duplicate variants.
Generate a draft with the sitemap generator, then compare it with your site's actual navigation and canonical links. Check that every URL resolves, uses the intended protocol and hostname, and is updated when pages move or disappear. A sitemap helps discovery; it does not guarantee indexing.
Submit the final file through your search engine's webmaster tools and revisit it after site changes.
