For Plex-style server alternatives, judge playback on the devices and network you actually use.
- Import a small library with mixed codecs, subtitles, metadata, and multiple audio tracks.
- Test direct play and transcoding on each target client; watch server CPU and buffering.
- Verify user permissions, parental controls, and remote-access security.
- Check metadata correction, watch-state migration, and backup/restore.
- Measure bandwidth and storage needs for concurrent remote streams.
Keep media files and metadata backed up independently. A good catalog interface does not compensate for unsupported playback on a favorite device.
