RethinkDB workloads often depend on more than document reads: applications may use query composition and changefeeds. Compare candidates against those behaviors, not a generic database feature list. Start with the RethinkDB docs and alternatives index.
Migration probe
- Export a representative collection, including nested documents and fields with missing values.
- Recreate the key queries and indexes; compare result ordering, filters, and latency.
- If the app uses changefeeds, test insert, update, delete, reconnect, and resume behavior in the candidate.
- Run a backfill while writes continue; verify that no events are lost or applied twice.
- Rehearse rollback with a clear source-of-truth decision and a measured cutover window.
Document incompatible query semantics before changing application code. A successful bulk import does not prove the live workload is equivalent.
