VSCodium is built from VS Code's open-source code, but its default extension registry and telemetry settings differ. The useful question is whether your actual projects still work, not whether the two editors look alike.
A reversible trial
- Export your current extension list and copy one representative project.
- Open the copy in VSCodium. Check the language server, formatter, debugger, terminal, and any remote-development extension you rely on.
- Search for each required extension in the default registry. If one is missing, check its license and publisher-supported installation path before treating a third-party package as interchangeable.
- Compare settings sync, shortcuts, workspace trust, and update behavior on your operating system.
Keep the original editor installed until the project builds and debugs successfully. The VSCodium project documents the build differences; extension guidance is worth reading before migration.
