The security alternatives directory spans different jobs. A password manager, vulnerability scanner, and endpoint monitor are not substitutes just because all are labeled security.
Decide in this order
- State the asset and threat: accounts, devices, code, network, or stored data.
- List required controls, deployment environment, identity integration, and audit needs.
- Run a safe test that includes both a known issue and a benign case; measure false positives as well as misses.
- Check update cadence, alert ownership, incident response workflow, and export of evidence.
- Review vendor access, encryption boundaries, data residency, and how to exit without losing records.
Prefer a tool the team can configure, monitor, and respond to consistently. Buying a wider feature set does not replace clear ownership of alerts.
