An error tracker is valuable when it turns a failure into an actionable issue. For Sentry, instrument a staging app and deliberately trigger one handled error, one unhandled error, and a slow request.
Check stack traces, release attribution, source maps, alert routing, and whether the issue groups repeated events correctly. Inspect event payloads for tokens, cookies, email addresses, or request bodies that should be scrubbed. The Sentry documentation covers SDK controls, sampling, and data filtering for the exact platform. Test whether an on-call engineer can reproduce the fault from the report without seeing sensitive data.
Compare alternatives on event volume, retention, noise, self-hosting or managed cost, and export. A tool that captures everything can be expensive and risky; a tool that captures too little cannot support diagnosis. Measure the useful signal per alert.
