A security-monitoring stack should be tested with an investigation, not only an installation. Security Onion combines network and host telemetry; the challenge is collecting the right data and making alerts actionable.
Deploy a staging sensor where it can see a sanitized traffic feed. Trigger an authorized test event, then trace it through alert, packet or flow evidence, and host context if available. Measure packet loss, ingest volume, storage retention, and time to triage. Review the Security Onion documentation for deployment sizing and integrations.
Test rule updates, user roles, backups, and an outage of the manager or sensor. Compare alternatives using the same event and analyst task. A platform that produces more alerts is not necessarily better if analysts cannot explain them or the sensor misses a portion of the traffic.
