PhotoGIMP is primarily about making GIMP's interface and shortcuts feel familiar to people coming from other editors. For PhotoGIMP alternatives, first decide whether the pain is layout, shortcuts, or a missing image-editing feature.
- Try the same layered file with the current GIMP setup and a candidate.
- Measure how quickly common actions—selection, masking, retouching, export—can be completed.
- Check shortcut conflicts and whether updates overwrite custom settings.
- Save and reopen the editable source; inspect fonts and layer effects.
- Back up user configuration before installing interface modifications.
A UI preset cannot add unsupported file semantics. If compatibility is the real issue, test it directly.
