Workflow orchestration decisions should be tested with a failed run, not only a successful scheduled task. For Prefect alternatives, implement a small pipeline with a dependency and a recoverable error.
- Schedule and manually trigger the flow; record parameter and secret handling.
- Make one step fail, retry, and confirm downstream tasks do not run early or duplicate side effects.
- Test backfills, concurrency limits, cancellation, and idempotency.
- Inspect logs, alerts, run history, and how an operator resumes a failed flow.
- Compare deployment, worker maintenance, versioning, and migration of existing flow definitions.
A good orchestrator helps operators understand and recover work. Task syntax alone is a small part of that value.
