Label each digest with its algorithm and hash the exact same byte sequence after an explicit character encoding. MD5 can support compatibility checks but should not be presented as collision-resistant security; adding its output beside SHA-256 does not strengthen SHA-256. A digest detects change only when the expected value comes from a trusted source. Use a keyed MAC or signature for authenticity, and a password-hashing function for passwords. Include input length and pipeline version so later comparisons reproduce the same canonical bytes.
