Chess

The king of strategy games. Checkmate your opponent in this timeless classic!

About Chess

Chess is the ultimate strategy board game, with origins dating back over 1,500 years to India. Two players command armies of 16 pieces each on a 64-square board, aiming to checkmate the opponent's king. Chess is recognized as a sport by the International Olympic Committee and is played by hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

How to Play

Each piece moves in a unique way: pawns move forward, knights jump in an L-shape, bishops move diagonally, rooks move in straight lines, queens combine bishop and rook movement, and kings move one square in any direction. Capture opponent pieces by moving to their square. The goal is to checkmate the enemy king — put it in a position where it cannot escape attack.

Tips & Strategies

  • Control the center of the board (d4, d5, e4, e5) — pieces are most powerful from the center.
  • Develop your knights and bishops early — don't move the same piece twice in the opening.
  • Castle early to protect your king and connect your rooks.
  • Think about your opponent's threats before making your move — ask 'what is my opponent trying to do?'
  • Don't bring your queen out too early — it can be chased around by less valuable pieces.
