Pick the comparison that matches the question you need answered. JSON diff helps when you care which keys, values, arrays, or types changed in a valid JSON document. Text diff helps when line order, spacing, comments, or exact wording matters.
For example, reformatting an API response may create a noisy text diff but little structural change. Conversely, two configuration files with the same parsed values may still differ in comments or layout that your team wants to preserve. Check that both JSON inputs parse successfully before treating a structural comparison as meaningful.
For a consequential change, inspect both views and test the resulting file in the application that consumes it.
