Adding visible page numbers to a PDF is simple until a cover, table of contents, or appendix needs different numbering. Decide where numbering starts, whether the cover counts, and whether labels should use Arabic or Roman numerals. The viewer's page position may still differ from printed labels.
Preview first, middle, and last pages and check alignment across portrait and landscape layouts. Make sure the numbers do not overlap existing footers or appear outside printable margins. If bookmarks or references point to page numbers, update or verify them too. Keep the unnumbered original for future layout changes.
