Reversi

Outflank your opponent and dominate the board in this deep strategy classic!

About Reversi

Reversi, also known as Othello, is a strategy board game for two players invented in 1883 by either Lewis Waterman or John W. Mollett. The modern version, trademarked as Othello, was popularized by Goro Hasegawa in 1971. It is played on an 8×8 board with discs that are black on one side and white on the other, making it a game of territorial control and strategic thinking.

How to Play

Players take turns placing discs on the board. You must place your disc so that it outflanks one or more opponent discs in a straight line (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal). Outflanked discs are flipped to your color. If you have no valid moves, you must pass. The game ends when neither player can move. The player with more discs wins!

Tips & Strategies

  • Corner squares are the most valuable — once captured, they can never be flipped.
  • Avoid placing discs on squares adjacent to empty corners, as this gives your opponent access to the corner.
  • Focus on mobility — having more possible moves gives you control of the game's flow.
  • In the early game, try to have fewer discs — it limits your opponent's options and gives you more moves later.
  • Edge positions are strong but not as safe as corners — they can still be outflanked from the sides.
