Spacebar Chat

A self-hosted chat service must be judged by the community it can safely support. Spacebar aims at a Discord-compatible experience, but client compatibility and voice/video support should be checked against the exact release you intend to deploy.

Set up a small test server with roles, private channels, attachments, and a moderation incident. Invite users with different clients and networks. Test joining, notifications, search, message deletion, and restoring a backup. The Spacebar documentation notes that third-party client compatibility is not perfect and voice/video remains experimental.

Estimate storage, bandwidth, updates, abuse handling, and the admin response to account compromise. Do not migrate a full community after a text-chat demo. Publish a clear data export and rollback plan, and make sure moderators can enforce rules without relying on undocumented client behavior.
