Complementary (opposite on the wheel): The Mediterranean palette above is roughly complementary — warm oranges against cool blue. Images with natural light often contain complementary relationships because sunlight creates warm-cool contrasts.
Analogous (neighbors on the wheel): A photo of autumn leaves will give you an analogous palette — reds, oranges, yellows, and yellow-greens all sitting next to each other. These palettes feel cohesive and calming.
Triadic (three colors equally spaced): Harder to find in nature, but common in street photography and graphic design. A mural with red, blue, and yellow elements will extract as roughly triadic.
Split-complementary: One color plus the two colors adjacent to its complement. Photos of tropical flowers against green foliage often produce this — the flower's color (say, purple) against yellow-green and blue-green.
When you extract a palette and it feels "off," it's usually because the harmony type doesn't match the intended use:

Every color has a temperature. This seems obvious with red (warm) and blue (cool), but it gets subtle fast.

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) defines minimum contrast ratios between text and background:
A contrast ratio of 1:1 means the text and background are the same color (invisible). A ratio of 21:1 is black on white (maximum contrast). Most real-world designs fall between 4:1 and 12:1.

Certain types of images produce palettes that are beautiful but problematic:
Sunset photos: All mid-tone warm colors. Gorgeous together, but try putting peach text on a coral background — the contrast ratio will be around 1.5:1. Illegible.
Pastel-heavy images: Soft pinks, light blues, lavender. These colors are all close in lightness value, so no combination has sufficient contrast for text.
Earth tone palettes: Tans, browns, olives. They can feel muddy and low-contrast, especially for users with color vision deficiency.
The fix: Every extracted palette needs at least one very dark color (for text) and one very light color (for backgrounds). If your extraction didn't produce these, add them manually. A near-black (#1A1A2E) and a near-white (#FAFAF8) will anchor almost any palette without breaking its character.
About 8% of men and 0.5% of women have some form of color vision deficiency. For extracted palettes, this means: don't rely solely on red vs. green to convey different states, ensure important distinctions have both color AND another visual cue (icons, patterns, labels), and test with a color blindness simulator.
The good news: if your palette has strong value contrast (some dark, some light colors), it will generally remain distinguishable even for users with color vision deficiency. Value contrast is more robust than hue contrast.

Why HSL is powerful: If you want a lighter version of the same color, just increase lightness. Want a muted version? Decrease saturation. Want a related color? Shift the hue by 30 degrees. HSL makes color relationships intuitive and manipulation predictable.
Use HSL when: Creating color scales (light-to-dark variants), building design systems with consistent relationships, doing any work where you need to reason about color relationships rather than just specify individual values.
CSS now supports OKLCH, a perceptually uniform color space where colors that differ by equal amounts look equally different to human eyes — which isn't true for RGB or HSL. Use it when building design system color scales that need to feel visually consistent.
You've got your colors. Now let's actually use them.
Pro tip: Create a "Palette" frame in your Figma file showing all colors with their hex codes, intended uses, contrast ratios against common backgrounds, and do/don't examples. This becomes your team's color reference.

From each extracted color, generate a 10-step scale from 50 (nearly white with a tint) through 500 (the base extracted color) to 900 (nearly black with a tint). This is the approach used by Tailwind CSS, Material Design, and most modern design systems. Generate these scales using HSL manipulation — adjust lightness in consistent steps from the base color.
