A visual novel engine must preserve narrative logic, assets, and save behavior—not only display dialogue. Use the Ren'Py alternatives page to find candidates, then migrate one representative scene.
Scene prototype
- Include a character sprite, background, music cue, choices, conditional branch, and persistent variable.
- Test rollback, skip, save/load, and what happens when script content changes after a save.
- Check localization workflow, text accessibility, input controls, and target platform packaging.
- Reuse existing assets only after checking supported formats and licenses.
- Estimate how much existing script syntax, custom Python, and tooling must be rewritten.
A candidate is viable when writers can maintain the branching story and players can resume safely. A nice editor preview is not enough.
