A damaged PDF may fail to open because of incomplete downloads, broken cross-reference data, or malformed content. A repair tool may recover some pages or rebuild enough structure to open the file, but missing bytes cannot always be restored. Start from a copy and retain the original for another recovery path.
Open the repaired file in two viewers and compare page count, images, text extraction, forms, bookmarks, and signatures with any known good version. A file that opens without an error may still have silent omissions. If the document matters for legal, financial, or archival purposes, obtain a fresh source copy when possible rather than trusting an uncertain repair.
